According to dictionary.com, the definition of sustainability is the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed.  The term is often used to describe the position of an individual or group of people in regards to survival.  In recent years, many people have begun to question how sustainable the Earth is because natural resources are depleting.  Consistent action needs to be taken in order to save the Earth.

In order to have sustainability, people on Earth are going to have to make some sacrifices.  It is vital that people recycle, limit the amount of driving they do, and refrain from burning their garbage.  The movement of taking actions to preserve the environment has been referred to as “going green.”  I feel it is the responsible of every citizen of the Earth to do these things.

The EPA encourages people to take actions to reduce pollution in the environment.  It starts in people’s homes.  If possible, people should use products which carry the Energy Star label.  Products with the Energy Star label meet strict guidelines set by government agencies to ensure conservation of energy.  Another thing people can do in their homes is purchase furniture that is made from recycled materials.

There are other environmental friendly changes one can make in their home.  One option is to look into changing the source of energy in the home.  Over the past decade, more people have begun using solar and wind energy to power their homes.  If you can’t or don’t want to change to solar or wind energy, you should still using energy efficient heating and cooling systems.

Some other things that are important for sustainability are reducing energy and conserving resources.  Many companies, such as Nissan and Toyota, have developing electric cars that will eliminate emissions given off by gas-powered cars.  In addition, many cars run on alternative fuels that are better for the environment than gasoline.  Also, people should carpool to work and to go to the shopping market whenever possible.

Sustainability is required in order for people to maintain a quality standard of living.  A continuous population increase over the past couple of centuries has led to a increased consumption of natural resources on Earth.  Luckily, people have the power to make changes in their daily life that will help to preserve the natural resources on Earth.
